Shopify won’t connect

shop_not_permitted, missing scopes, or invalid credentials: what each means and the fix.

“shop_not_permitted”

The app was created in another organization, for example from a Partner account at dev.shopify.com. Delete it and create it again starting from your store’s own admin: Settings → Apps → Develop apps → Build apps in Dev Dashboard (step 1).

“Missing write_orders” (or another scope)

In the Dev Dashboard, open the app → Versions → Create a version, add the missing scopes (paste the whole scope line), and Release. Then approve the update in Settings → Apps in your Shopify admin and click Connect Shopify again.

Invalid credentials

Copy the Client secret again (eye icon in the app’s Settings → Credentials) and check that the app is installed: Installs → Install app.

Who can do this

The store owner, or staff with the app development permission. Collaborator accounts can’t open the Dev Dashboard for a store.

Still failing after a connect? The message under the form names the exact check that failed.
